When you have the book open you'll notice all the outer edged top bottom and sides (the open page top counts as one), using the x techniques you be aware of 'seeing' them as you turn the pages. While seeing the blip page helps a soft focus as if you are looking through the book helps.

If you see the blip page you don't need to concentrate on seeing the 4 edges of the book. One or the other will work fine.
The defocus state is not the same as the hard focus as what we are used to when regular reading. What you really want is to have parallel vision of the page.
