Laura, start with the book, all the info from the course is in the book. Along with the forum a lot of folks have manage to learn with just the book. That being the cheapest option for starters.
Check the local book shops they can order it in for you if they haven't got it.
It being an 8 tape course I can understand your mums concerns. A lot of people start courses like these but never finish them. Those that really want to learn will learn it anyway they can. So good luck.
