I dont like to drink coffee to stay awake (just to keep warm during the winter, before school starts).

My best tip would be to take detailed notes in class. Make a mind map, when you feel like you are about to fall asleep try to make some more pictures or color your pictures better.

other than that, go to bed earlier.

I don't drink coffee and I do go to bed early.
Any other tips? Like the three finger technique from Silva Method? How does that work?
Thanks for your responses.

Other things you can do:

Make sure that the teacher/lecturer is on your right hand side. If you have them on your left it is easier for the mind to switch off.

If you habitually sit yourself near an air conditioner, ot storage/utility room (pipes are carriers of noise from other rooms) be suspicious that you are being put to sleep by noise in the 50hz range... find another place in the class. (faulty flouresent lights and computer monitiors can also cause this problem) Just listen consiously if you can hear a humming sound. If you do move yourself as far away from it as possible. Noise from students wandering and talking in the hallway can also lull you to sleep avoid sitting near the open door.

Another cause for your dozing could be a lack of oxygen. Do some deep breathing exercises before class. If the room is stuffy see if you can do something to let more ventilation in. Also a lack of oxygen during sleep at night can take revenge during class. Make sure your room is well ventilated while you sleep.

Avoid hi sugar content foods and softdrinks prior to class. While they provide a short term pick me up they cause an even deeper drop in sugar levels less than 30 minutes later so the body goes into sleep mode. If you habitually snack on sweets, energy bars and soft drinks it's time to quit if you want to stay awake in class. Since you have problems in the morning check your cereal and use less sugar.

Do a check to find out why you are having trouble staying awake before resorting to techniques like the Silva Awake control (better suited to than the 3 fingers technique). They cannot work for long if you ignore the real reason for your problem.

I am going to guess that you already know how to enter the accelerative learning state. 3 to 1 countdown. So rather than explain the Silva Method Awake Control I'll give a brief method you can use, using what you've learnt from the photoreading system.

The reason affirmations are said just prior to opening your eyes for photoreading is because you are talking to your inner mind most directly with an internal focus and the inner mind tends to follow through. Thus making them most effective.

So instead of preparing yourself to photoread a book you prepare yourself to remain alert during class. You enter the accerative learning state in preparation for being focused in the class. You modify the affirmations to suit. Tell yourself that you want to remain alert in class. So you would state an affirmation like; I am taking xyz class while I am in in this class I will remain alert and focused on the information being presented in this class. I will understand and remember all the important facts that will help me get my best passing grade for this class. It helps if you say your affirmations three times also limit them to 2 or 3 concise statements. Say the affirmations a second time while you pick up your tangerine. Say it a third time when you open your eyes putting the tangerine in place. If you find your mind wondering during class or the tired feeling coming over you, just smile and reposition the tangerine.

Some things about affirmations. State them in the present and state them in the positive. EG Say I will remain awake and alert, rather than I won't fall asleep. You need to specificly tell your inner mind what you want to move towards.

While the awake control from the Silva Method would help you to remain awake it would do little to help you participation in the class. Thats why I presented a modified method that I think would suit your needs better.

If anyone would like a more detailed outline of the method email me and I'll write a more detailed article and send it as a doc.

theres a paraliminal 10 minute supercharger... supposed to give you lots of energy, people say it works better than cofee but no side-affects like addiction or highs and lows. just another option...
