Hey, don't let the moralists get you down. I understand PhotoReading is a big investment in money, and time. (Although it saves time in the long run).
My advice is to experiement with lots and lots of little books. When you get good, you can start AutoFlipping (a cross between Spontanious and Manual activation, where you find the information "at random"). I did this with a friend who was asking about the novel Fight Club (my first attempt to PR ficton). I didn't know the answer, (because I hadn't done any step execpt for PhotoReading), but I opened the book "at random" and put my finger on the correct paragraph discribing the scene he was after. If you can do that, and do it repeatedly, you'll convince your mom you made a good investment.
