Ok, I started to PR my first book. I think I have some difficulties in previewing. The book says that the entire process should be matter of few minutes for a book. "Few" means 2/3 minutes, I suppose...well, I used about 13 minutes only for previewing, and I don't know if I did everything well, too. I have difficulties understanding well the process. I mean, how can I survey the book, write down keyworks, state my goals in only 3 minutes? Seems impossible to me, right now .

But never give up..

To make everything more understandable for everyone, that's what I done in detail :

- I sitted down in the chair and entered the relaxed alterness state.

- I stated my goal. The book is a non-fiction book about Italy. My goal for the book was "I want to know more about Italy. I want to know about its history, its constitution, its population and geography, to get a greater understanding about my country" (I am from Italy).

- I picked up the book and started "surveying" it. I looked at the first and last cover, the copyright notice, the author name, the "internal structure" of the book (images, graphs and so on), the index summary. At this time, at least 5 minutes were already passed. Theorically, after 5 minutes the entire Previewing process should be already accomplished.. :

- I started to flip the pages, and I wrote down every word which drawn my attention in some way. I found this a difficult task. I really don't know if the words I pick up are really trigger words or just a bunch of words I picked up randomly just to fill up the page.

The book says to flip trough every 20 pages and then write down words which draw my attention. So in few words I should flip about 20 pages, stop flipping at about the 20th page, and then look for an important word?

The Preview stage usually take about 8 minutes for the average 200 page book first couple of times. Just remember it is a process whereby you gain some familarity with the book and give yourself the opportunity of redefining your goals. Even deciding if you are really interested in the book. For the first time you'll expect to spend a bit more time on it. Remember many things get better with practice so expect to spend less time on it with each book. At this point you're still trying to get the feel for it.

The idea is just to scan for things that seem to pop out to you. 20 pages is an approximation. I just grab a few pages and give it a quick glance. Words in italics, underlined in bold in the middle of a paragraph, from subheads and headings are trigger words. Also any odd word that just grabs your interest. Trigger words no matter what you write down are all good. Let go of judging them. You only need one or two that will help you to later activate the book other important words may show up during activation so if you find 15 to 25 trigger words in 5 to 8 minutes good and if you only find 8 go with that. If they are words you found in the book then they are perfect trigger words.

Now we know that practice will speed up the process and first time we may fall short of the mark we set ourselves... no point in beating ourselves up right?

On the whole you're heading in the right direction.

Just keep going with it play with it and see what happens.

If usually it takes 8 minutes for the normal 200 pages book I am doing well, because the book I am PRing is 400 pages. So 13 minutes, considering that this is my first time, seem good!

Anyway I think I started with the wrong book. It does not contain any italic or bold word, it is just plain text with some images here and there. But that's ok, now I understood better what I should do.
