The best way to use the system is to get manual activation working for you so that you have the benefit of being able to gain your normal comprehension of a book in 1/3 the time it takes you to regular read it.
In the long run your method would work on a few books however you would always be hoping for spontaneous activation and still wind up regular reading books that you really want to be sure you got information out of. The whole point of photoreading is to spend less time 'reading' and still gaining just as much or better comprehension of the text consciously.
Spontaneous activation could take months to achieve by this route. Practicing manual activation is the faster way to achieve spontaneous activation. You'll notice it while you are activating a book that you already 'know' a lot of what is there.
The tapes and course will guide you to do the manual activation it still comes down to actually doing it.
Since you say you are not clear about activation do a search of the forum you'll find quite a few tips and ideas to help you in that area.
