I was curious if Photoreading is more effective in low light situations. It seems that the goal is to rely on rod vision (ie peripheral vision), so it would make sense that low light would work better to disinhibit our foveal dominance. Foveal vision is great for reading small print in bright light, because it is a densely packed area about the size of the head of a pin and containing about 70,000 cone receptors. However, it's area of focus is tiny, which is why you can read text, but the words three lines up are blurred. Cones are also not very light sensitive, but are very color sensitive.
I would assume that by reading in low light that you're rod vision would pretty much take over. Is there any research on this?
Also, I was wondering if Paul Scheele or anyone could point me in the direction of some of the research regarding the role of vision in the subconscious and in particular about preconscious processing? I'm writing an article that will touch upon the topic for the next issue of Girevik Magazine.

Earlier post pointed out that peripheral vision is what you need to open up for seeing in the dark... Apparently it's taught in the armed forces.

A number of photoreaders have also mentioned that they prefer to photoread in soft light finding it easier. I've always prefered to read in soft light (even regular reading despite the admonishments that I will damage my eyesight )

Have you searched the forum?

I did a brief search of the archives but came up empty.
I kind of cut my earlier post short. The reason that I think PR would work best in the dark is that it would activate your peripheral vision system more effectively. As I was saying before, the fovea is an area of densely packed cones. As you go out to the periphery, the ratio of rods to cones shifts towards favoring the rods. The rods are less sensitive to color, but they can detect miniscule amounts of light, such as a candle ten miles away. It can do this because there can be hundreds of rods for one nerve fibre, whereas there is only one cone per nerve fibre. This allows them to pick up and register tiny amounts of light. At night, have you ever seen something out of the corner of your eye moving in the bushes and then turn to look at it and have it go away? Chances are it's not a ghost, it's just that your cones are not well suited for low-light conditions. Another interesting thing is that rod vision has a completely different neural pathway than cone vision. I would suspect that rod vision is tied to the preconscious processor and the subconscious mind. The foveal and macular (cone) vision is most likely sent to the conscious mind. Interestingly, scientists still do not know where these two vision systems come together to form the final, complete visual image.
Anyways, I'm still curious if my theory is valid? Have any studies been done on PR in low light conditions? Also, could someone point me to any of the studies that have been done on PR, or even accelerate learning? I keep coming up empty on Infotrac and Lexis-Nexus. I might try Pub Med tomorrow.

Yes, I've actually read that article. I haven't tried nightwalking yet, but it sounds intriguing. I have a friend that might be interested in trying it with me. It sounds far fetched, but at the same time they make a very persuasive argument for why it works. At the very least, it flies with everything I've seen in physiology and neuroscience books.

Seems to be in agreement with what you are saying.

As for vision being a part of preconscious processing... Yes I agree with that... I did come across some research that seemed to show that vision is part of preconscious processing. However the article gave me the impression that this evidence is considered inconclusive.
