Earlier post pointed out that peripheral vision is what you need to open up for seeing in the dark... Apparently it's taught in the armed forces.
A number of photoreaders have also mentioned that they prefer to photoread in soft light finding it easier. I've always prefered to read in soft light (even regular reading despite the admonishments that I will damage my eyesight 
)
