How do you get past people telling you that photoreading is not possible? My parents keep bugging me saying that I wasted my money on this and that I was stupid for thinking it can be done. I try and ignore them because I know it's possible, but they keep putting doubt in my mind and every time I try and photoread I can hear them in my mind nagging me about it.

Hi

My dad doesn't entirely believe in photoreading as well, though I do not live with him, so it's easier for me to ignore it.

Photoreading IS possible, as you well know. It is a very large part of my life right now. With your parents, my best suggestion is not to argue with them. Try to minimise bringing up the subject at all. When photoreading works for you, the results will speak for themselves.

If doubts plague you, I suggest you try the NOPS formula. Play around...own your doubts, play with them and stay with the whole process. I've recently had a period of some distractions as well, but staying with it got me through - it's past now. The one thing I learnt was that you are responsible for your thoughts. If you find them limiting you, then choose to change them. Do it a few times, and they'll start to fade.

During the process itself, if doubts resurface, acknowledge them, but concentrate on the chant. Another way to replace them is with an affirmation of sorts. You can work that into a chant. I've recently had an imaginary mascot on my shoulder to remind me to be positive - he's a great help!

You might add affirmations like
"I release all doubts about the process."
"My confidence in the process improves all the time. PR works for me."
to the list of affirmations before you start to flip pages.

Hope this helps.

Do your best to ignore their comments and negative beliefs. Learn the PR system and then do a deminstration(sp?) for them of PR, let them choose the book for you to PR so they don't think you read it ahead of time,
a new book would work perfectly for this

James,

The purpose of the photoreading system is to help you manage your studying better and faster. The only person you need to learn to photoread for, is you, so that you can make the best use of it.

Ideally avoid bringing up the subject with your parents. If they should happen to suggest that you have wasted your money on the course the only thing you can really say is that perhaps that is a life lesson you had to learn.

Disagreeing and trying to prove your parents wrong will only bring on more fustrations. It doesn't help you to learn to photoread and it doesn't help you to get along with your parents either.

If you want the system to work. Do it quietly. Devote some time everyday to the system 30 minutes is enough. Use the 5 day test/plan on a 200 page book that interests you. No school related text book, another book. Try that out and see. If you apply the 5 day test/plan to 1, 2 or 3 books in one month I am sure you will become relaxed enough to use the method for your studies.

Do what you can to return you thoughts to photoreading you could even add the statement "photoreading works for me" to the chant if you need postive reinforcement. I suspect that it is during activation that you experience more trouble staying focused. In this case I suggest you use music in the form of Mozart(stings are best) or baroque music playing in the backgound while activating. This style of music can help you to focus a little better. Remember to use your Personal Genius paraliminal (I doubt that you have the Anxiety Free one) and even if you only have the Memory supercharger when you pop that one in tell yourself that you want to remember all the success times where you performed well. Use it before activation in this way and you will probably notice an increase in confidence when you start activating your book.

Once you are relaxed enough you'll notice yourself applying the system to your studies. In the mean time the disagreement between you and your parent will probably have subsided.

Remember the only person that you want to learn the photoreading system for is you and you don't have to prove anything to anyone. So take the time you need and you will succeed.

I hate telling someone to "have faith," because I consider faith to be a form of information disease. However, I have finally found the words to express the idea. Athony Robbins puts it this way, "Confident people have the ability to develop competence, but competent people with no confidence can't use their compotence." It is vitally important that you understand you have the ability to PhotoRead.

You may wish to use your telephone coaching. While you will be talking to a paid employee of Learning Strategies, you'll be talking to someone who understands the system well enough to be paid to present it to others over the phone.

For specific argumentation techniques, remember you are dealing with limitations. Rather than argue "yes" to their "no," find the limits of their "no" and the reasoning behind the "no."

Questions include:

Are you saying that it is impossible to PhotoRead, or that I am not capable?
(Remember, the technique is based on what actual people were doing, and were being paid to do).

How do you explain phenomina such as "blindsight?"
(Blindsight is what happens when the part of the brain responsible for presenting visual data to the conscious mind is partly destroyed. The person can still see, but they don't know what they're looking at. When asked to take a guess, the guesses are close to 100% accurate).

Just keep asking questions about the nature of their belief. Eventually, you can Socratic-Method them into agreeing with you, but that's a little tough and is seen as being manipulative. What you're aiming for is an admission that they don't possess enough data to know that it cannot work. Once you have that wiggle room, it is up to you to show them what is in your capabilities.
