I have found from experience that million dollar vocab. and personal genius are great for writing creativly. The best thing an aspiring writer can do though is to start photo reading. PR all of your favorite authors plus as many classic authors as possible. In my experience the authors with the most highly developed styles are the best. I found that writers like Aleister Crowley, Shakespear, P.B. Shelly, Browning, Blake, Swinburn, etc. ad nauseum, have really helped me develop my own voice.
Personally I've stayed away from more contemporary writers to prevent them from influencing my style but thats just a matter of preference.
Hope this helps a bit.
