Yes. Just avoid letting it pull you into 'auto' focus. If you do happen to have a problem with falling into 'auto'focus when you recognise words, PR the book upside down though with pictures your curiousity/desire to identify the picture might cause you to lose photofocus more often when it's upside down
Do what works and yes you can even see words clearly when in photofocus - for many it takes a fair bit of practice.
