"""Entering PhotoFocus has an immediate effect of creating a brainwave signature characterized by higher amplitude waves in both Low Beta and High Theta simultaneously. Curiously, ALPHA is NOT very active. In fact, it seems remarkably supressed. That makes sense in that our goal is not to connect the conscious and nonconscious during PhotoReading, but to route information directly into the nonconscious. Alpha is known to mediate between the two. We see Alpha show up in activation, and in more elevated amplitudes than with regular reading."""

OK - just as well I didn't try and use alpha then! The quote is from one of Paul Scheele's posts in the following thread...

In other words just do it because the mind finds the right brainwave pattern for the job.

I understand your wish to use the light/sound machine to help you. I was very interested in Binaural Beats and such myself, and still am to some degree. The other people on this forum gave some good advice. Namely, the most remarkable thing about the brain is not that we can isolate and talk about "right-brain" "left-brain" "Slow-wave" "fast-wave", as if these give actual understanding to our mindstates, the most remarkable thing about the brain is that it constantly, at all times, acts together to create/support a WHOLE MIND...a whole experience. However, I still think that there is potential to guide certain aspects of its electromagnetic functioning towards desired states. ALS, Superlearning, whatever you choose to call it, cannot be reduced to just alpha. Even on a brainwave entrainment device your brain is still producing an incredible variety of frequencies and amplitudes...if it wasn't I'd fear for your brain's health. It's just that some researchers have found CORRELATIONS between DOMINANT frequencies and amplitudes in CERTAIN areas in the brain, and the tricky-to-pin-down state called ALS. I suggest that you play around with the frequencies and effects on your light/sound machine and see what happens- just don't let this interfere with your "unaided" practice of photoreading. You might try using a combination of beta/theta for accelerated learning. Have you followed anything to do with the 40hz frequency? You might try fooling around with that if your machine supports it. If you find something that works/helps please let me know, I'll be very interested.

P.S. Photoreading doesn't let you have immediate recall of the material, making it tricky to judge or quantify.

it should be clear, if you read the photoreading book (or have the course) - remember, paul has you entering relaxed alertness ("alpha") during 'prepare' and 'preview', then suggests that you move even deeper ("theta") before photoreading.

Kristoff - no I haven't experimented with the 40 Hz thing, although I have heard about it... Do you have any more information about it? I am certainly interested, but I am a bit worried that it might fry my mind.

The method for using the proteus for photoreading.

Personally I dont bother with it.

However if activation is going badly for some reason I will use Personal Genius with the proteus. Usually that will snap me out of the mental fog.

In regards to the binaural stuff, I used the Brainwave Generator to modify a preset session someone else had made called "Hypnagogic Hologram". When I listened to that person's original version of it, seemed immersed in a strange stream of disconnected imagery. It is essentially a session which sweeps through a certain portion of EEG frequencies. I cannot recall for certain without being home and looking at the preset. I modified it by placing a 40Hz binaural which was only on when the "main" sweep was at 8Hz (5th subharmonic). This was extremely powerful for me. Whenever I listen to that, it serves to increase dream recall AND vividness. This was before I had heard of the Dream Play paraliminal. Since I've got that one now, I may experiment with embedding the modified Hypnagogic preset under it. maybe not. DP is pretty powerful as it is

Send me a copy of that preset if you can. I get confused on how to edit it. =) I'm pretty new to that BrainWave Gen program.

No mind frying here. I have used the 40hz frequency for general alertness. It also does seem to increase dream vividness if one plays it while asleep. Supposedly it has something to do with cortical-binding and that actual tests have been run with it, I don't remember any goos URLs though. I use SBaGen software, and am wondering what the BWGen is like. I seem to remember that one has to pay for it after 30 days. SBaGen is diffucult to learn but pretty powerful...I have to use Programmers File Editor to write my tone sequences.
Somebody mentioned something about 40hz coupled with 8hz ( a 5th harmonic or something). I'll try it. Please clarify.
Other tones that I find beneficial are 4,6, and 7.83, in various combinations. I must say that binaural beats are pretty cool and I would like to have light/sound machine but I have trouble justifying the cost. At least in my experience, these tools aren't all they're hyped up to be...they are very interesting and were very useful as I began meditation over 2 years ago but in terms of profundity I haven't had any spectacular experiences like I have with Lucid Dreaming. I have tried to combine the two, binaurals and dreaming, and it does seem to help dream recall, but it doesn't help to directly stimulate Lucid Dreaming. Anyways, if anyone has any specific advice on frequencies, or on combining it with other things I'd be open to it.

I think Stuart Hammerhoff identified 40Hz as the rate of quantum state collapse in the brain (e.i. "the speed of thought"). I think that frequency would be interesting in terms of attempting quasi-mystical activities such as remote viewing or prescience.
