i thought wireless networking was wi-fi, but anyways it doesnt matter

my friend and i want to set up a network mostly for gaming, between our houses [wireless of course]. he lives 1/2 mile away and there are trees between us. last night we both pulled out a 2 mile walkie talkie, both fairly cheap, and talked to each other [if that helps show we could probably get some connection]

we need to know what parts we'd need and how hard it is to set up.

anything else you know of that would apply would be helpful. as far as i know, we need 1 router, 1 pci card, and 2 extended antennas to bridge the half mile gap. we may not even need the antennas, and would try without first

WiFi typically goes 100ft but with one of these antennae you can go like a kilometer. I'd try it on mine but I'm too lazy to go buy the connectors (or photoread, for that matter). From what I've heard, WiFi antenna-building is quite popular.

Honestly, I didn't even know people tried going that far. I wasn't even aware of this "Wi-Fi" term, even though I have a wireless setup right here (in fact, I'm using the computer in question). =)

1/2 a mile is not a short distance; what kind of area are you in? Is it mostly wooded (I know you said trees) or are there buildings and stuff nearby? Any radio interference?

The best possible thing you could probably do is head over to the Wi-Fi forum at: http://www.wi-fitechnology.com/ and ask them for help.

Also, let us know your results - I know a college student who would drool at the idea of having high speed internet access shot straight to his laptop from his house to the coffee shop he frequents everyday (wipes mouth).

there are a fair amount of houses, but trees fill in a lot of the space around them. [yes mostly wooded]. no large buildings, [kind of in country/suburbs] there is an airstrip nearby, small, but it may be a good idea to ask them if 2.4ghz wifi would interfere

yeah, i will, well, if i get it to work, definately, otherwise the idea may just die. the problem with projecting his 'net to the coffee shop is that people can find out that it's there [being its on/near a campus there's a good chance someone will look occasionally]. i think you can restrict access with the router used, but i'm not too sure. also to go long distances i'm [pretty] sure you need a directional antenna, vs an omni antenna. [meaning: directional-one direction, can open up to (exa) 10degrees up and down and 20degrees left to right; omni-all directions but not as strong]

Have you gone to a particular Manufacturers' site?
I personally found that D-Link has some excellent presentations and hardware for 'Off-Prem' or external wireless connectivity. http://www.dlink.com/products/wireless/index.asp
