In the first setp of photoreading, We need to clarify the goal of reading and make a relax spirit status.

How about the sentence:"I want to know the important information this book refered!"

Is it suitable for clarify the goal of reading??

or I need such a sentence to clarify the goal of reading when study discrete mathematics: I want to learn discrete mathematics to make my exam pass!!

Usually I have a different purpose for each book. If I were PR'ing a math book, my purpose might be, "To gain a better understanding of mathematics so that I can easily and effortlessly answer the questions."

Try to make the purpose very specific, and show why you want to accomplish something--I want to increase my understanding of math SO THAT I can answer the quesions.

I agree that a good purpose for reading will have the Why along with the What (the goal). Putting a little effort in making the What more specific is helpful.

If after a while you notice your goal has change, then change it and PR again. It's fast. It's easy, and it's fun.

The Why help set a priority for the problem or PRing so that your inner mind will work on it, as apposed to one of the other many problems it has to deal with.

I have an idea after reading your reply...

If I need to read a whole book...
first time PRing , the goal may be..
I want to realize the context to help me solve the related problem in the text and related exam.

There may be 10 chapter in the book, each chapter may have two or more topics,
The second time , reduce the mass of reading to to chapter or even less. Thus the goal may become "I want to know the [TOPIC] such that I can solve the problem in the end of the chapter"

Do PRing five times to complete the whole 10 chapters.

I think it's a good idea to PRing the whole book as the first time reading and then decomposite the context into more sub-context then PRing partly .

Do you agree this ??

Your purpose is pretty good but could be improved. Be very specific!

Secondly, you don't have to PR the book multiple times. I would just PR it once and super read and dip a couple times.

However, if it is a thick textbook, and if you are in school, I suggest PR'ing the assigned chapters, along with a couple before and a couple after.

I didn't mean for you to plan your questions for a layered approach. I meant to that you'll get more questions as you consciously learn the book. It may be in layers, but it might be a series of in-depth learning (which is the way many text books are written).
