How many activation passes have you done on each book? The fact that it kind of feels like nothing happened during or as a result of the PhotoReading step is pretty normal.
The thing to check is how much you found out about the book in what time it took you and how much you would normally have gotten out of the book in the same time. For most people the answer would be something like I might be up to chapter 3 in this time.
