The act of putting it down on paper does stimulate connections between the eye and the hand, of course, and that's always good for memory. Mostly, though, the use of icons and the use of space and lines to show the RELATIONSHIP between the icons is the power of the mindmap. The most profound mindmap experience I had was one day flipping open to the Book of the Subgenius' inside cover. There is a mindmap there that looks like a big map of the convoluted cosmology of the Church, but that mandala is the entirety of the Book compressed down to a single page. Oh, it was like sniffing a million magic-markers at once while receiving a slow sheet-lightening enima.
