In his book, "Speed Reading" by Tony Buzan, he suggests reading to be a 7 part process:
"1. Recognition - the reader's knowledge of alphabetic symbols...
2. Assimilation - The physical process by which light is reflected from the word and is received by the eye, then transmitted via the optic nerve.
3. Intra-integration - The equivalent to basic comprehension, and refers to the linking of all parts of the information being read with all other appropriate parts.
4. Extra-integration - This includes analysis, criticism, appreciation, selectiona and rejection....
5. Retention - The basic storage of information.
6. Recall - The ability to get back out of storage that which is needed, preferably when it is needed.
7. Communication - The use to which the information is immediately or eventually put; which includes the very important subdivision: thinking."
