For the actual photoreading process the whole book is recommended. Appropriate material is a non fiction book that interest you. Something that you would like to know.

Photoread the whole book anyway. When activating technical books its is best to treat each page as a chapter. Still photoread a chapter or two before and a chapter or two after the chapter you wish to activate.

Yes, activation is a lot easier on books that contain information you already have some knowledge of. Books or text that contains information that is totally new to you will naturally take a bit longer to activate. They usually take longer to regular read too.
