I know there have been several posts about this in the past, but it's easier to have clarification in a single place.
I have a book I wanted to attempt to learn by photoreading, a book to teach oneself Dutch. The content is very pictorial, set out into chapters that're just 10-20 pages long covering a set topic. Pronunciation guide and everything.
I've noticed a lot of suggestions to use the 5 day test to prove to yourself that photoreading does work - and I was wondering how I'd apply it in this case, or if I'd be better applying it to something a little simpler and that I have a greater desire to learn?
My motives for learning Dutch are simply that I have the book here and would like to have a go at PRing. Does motive play that large a role that it has to be something you really want to learn for you to be able to PR it effectively? Because there are many things I'd like to learn and that'd be invaluable to me, but that I don't pine for from the bottom of my soul.
If I used the 5 day test, would I be better off just doing a single chapter and PRing that over each of the 5 days - as has been recommended for technical articles in other posts on this board; or would I be quite capable going through the whole book but just previewing a few chapters and activating them initially?
Probably the most difficult part of photoreading would be the picking out of trigger words. If I want to learn something that I don't know about, then by definition I wouldn't be really sure what it is I'm trying to pick out. If I was PRing a book about programming and I'd never done any before, I wouldn't know to look for syntax, declaration, function, pointer etc... With the language it is somewhat easier because I can see the first chapter is about professions and it tells me that I'll learn how to talk about myself, give others information, introduce others and name some professions. Other books that aren't laid out as clearly and don't state as easily to find what is going to be learnt - how would I know what to pick out from those?
