I know there have been several posts about this in the past, but it's easier to have clarification in a single place.

I have a book I wanted to attempt to learn by photoreading, a book to teach oneself Dutch. The content is very pictorial, set out into chapters that're just 10-20 pages long covering a set topic. Pronunciation guide and everything.

I've noticed a lot of suggestions to use the 5 day test to prove to yourself that photoreading does work - and I was wondering how I'd apply it in this case, or if I'd be better applying it to something a little simpler and that I have a greater desire to learn?

My motives for learning Dutch are simply that I have the book here and would like to have a go at PRing. Does motive play that large a role that it has to be something you really want to learn for you to be able to PR it effectively? Because there are many things I'd like to learn and that'd be invaluable to me, but that I don't pine for from the bottom of my soul.

If I used the 5 day test, would I be better off just doing a single chapter and PRing that over each of the 5 days - as has been recommended for technical articles in other posts on this board; or would I be quite capable going through the whole book but just previewing a few chapters and activating them initially?

Probably the most difficult part of photoreading would be the picking out of trigger words. If I want to learn something that I don't know about, then by definition I wouldn't be really sure what it is I'm trying to pick out. If I was PRing a book about programming and I'd never done any before, I wouldn't know to look for syntax, declaration, function, pointer etc... With the language it is somewhat easier because I can see the first chapter is about professions and it tells me that I'll learn how to talk about myself, give others information, introduce others and name some professions. Other books that aren't laid out as clearly and don't state as easily to find what is going to be learnt - how would I know what to pick out from those?

That's probably all the questions I have ;-)

If you want to learn another language, you'll need more books and a native speaker who can help you verify what you learnt. Remember the letter and the sound they make are not necessarily the same as in English.

If the book in question is part of the selection that you are learning from then photoread the whole book in one sitting, (for language learning expect to photoread it about once a day for 3 to 4 weeks if you really are planning on learning the language.)

If you want to prove to yourself that photoreading works do it with a non fiction book that you are interested in but haven't read yet. Proving that photoreading works for you and learning a new language at the same time is a bit like learning to juggle and learning to stand up for water skiing at the same time. It's easier if you have some skill at one before you bring on the other.

To me your motives for learning Dutch do not sound like you really care if you do or don't learn Dutch (from the way you wrote about it). If that's the case then you'll probably find that it lowers your motive for learning to photoread too. Of course if your motive is more powerful than and you want to get photoreading working to learn the language as soon as possible I would advise you even more strongly to learn photoreading first. Get photoreading working for you so that you know what you are doing and then apply it to learning another language or even ones studies at school. It's the same if you want to learn photoreading so that you can improve your grades at school because you've been 'failing' too well. Learn to photoread on something other than your textbooks first. Once you know how to photoread and understand the system you can then apply it to your school work. That way you're not tied up trying to figure out if you made a mistake in the photoreading steps or the assignment when you miss the outcome you desired.

Once you are able to apply the system picking trigger works will be a simple matter even in learning a foreign language.

Activation is usually done for the whole book in repeated activation passes through the whole book. The five day test would also apply for your Dutch learning book however it is highly unlikely that you would finish a book like that in five days. Remember textbooks usually take longer to regular read for learning (can be 50 hours or more) so using the photoreading system you would still expect to spend 5 to 16 hours on those.

When it came to learning to photoread I did it just for the heck of it. Just wanted to see what I could do to get my reading done faster. I wouldn't say that was a motive from the bottom of my soul either. Even having learnt to photoread you still want a clear purpose of 'why' you are reading something in order to get something out of it. Being curious and wanting to know what an author has to say about something is enough to start with

On a related note, does anyone know how the "û" sound is pronounced? I'm learning Sumerian invocations, and they all start with the phrase, "Shiptû." Thanks.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try with something else that won't take as much time up. It has a pronunciation guide and the like in it, and it is one of an infinite amount of things I want to learn - but it isn't top of my list.

As for the Sumerian pronunciations, ask Zecharia Sitchin. If you've not read any of his books - which are about mankind's beginning's based on Sumerian texts - I highly recommend them for the open minded ;-)
