There are enough cues and clues in the patterns of the letters for the mind to be able to sort out the patterns. Ironically this was demonstrated by 3 posters in this last week.
The fact of the matter is the brain looks for and sorts out patterns. It has even been shown to 'fill in the blanks'. (The blind spot.) There has even been research done that shows that people can 'see' words at an extreme distance where we say we cannot see them and when asked to 'guess' the word they have a very high success rate. Statistically much greater than chance.
This research is only the tip of the ice berg to understanding what the brain does. How exactly it does it... they are still working on it.
