Learner, do what you must do and if you want to use photoreading you still can. Learn it for books and things that interest you. Once you do that you will probably find that there are ways you can use it to meet the requirements of your school.
You're right too speed isn't everything. To learn one must be a participant and some things are best learnt slowly
