It isn't really a wrong way but rather haphazard approach that most seem to take thinking they are taking a short cut to getting the art of photoreading under their belt.
I believe your question was valid and understand that it's hard to relax if you suspect what you're doing is a waste of time. At the same time I found that just relaxing and noticing what worked got me there a lot faster
