The key to learning Cisco (if you are in the networking academy)... is that you have to love routers and networking.
It is possible to photoread Cisco books.... The activation comes when you get on the router and start typing in commands.
Ive been photoreading CCIE level stuff for the last month. It's pretty nice when you can blurt out Administrative Distances for routing protocols
