Try it on non fiction books you can take home and activate.
Another option is to get e-books if you cannot get books for some reason.
When it comes down to it if you really want to activate those rare books you get yourself a seat in the library and activate them there. Do your mind map in the library. I've done it on the floor next to the shelves since there is a limit of 3 books on one subject I decided to activate 2 there in the library. Where there is a will there is a way.
