Yes. The conscious mind does act as a filter.
At the same time it cannot influence you if it goes against your morals or beliefs. So what works for one person with direct learning can be blocked by another so that they do not get the same benefits. For that reason Direct Learning will be a case of try it and see. By activating it you can undermind the process because you start creating expectations as to how the experience is 'supposed' to manifest itself. In your case it might be manifesting differently but because the experience isn't what you 'expect' the actual manifestation is being ignored and invalidated.
In other words by activating the book you risk looking out the wrong window rather than going with the flow.
