www.nonags.com also check the regular software venders (download, zdnet etc), search for "pdf writer". I've notice that some have offered a PDF write for free and I know there is some cheaper shareware versions. They probably don't have the bells and whistles of acrobat but they seem to be for converting files.
I haven't tired them because I already have acrobat.
You could also consider coverting doc to a html page (it's already a feature in word, save as and select .html form the format insted of the default .doc) and open it in a browser, where you only need to hold the space bar or page down key to photoread. No additional cost and faster to convert shorter files. Anything less that 20 pages I just plant the curser at the top and hit page down repeatedly.
