I don't have a copy of the first edition but can tell you the basics is still the same, the first edition was 1993, 3rd editon 1999. Go through the course at least once doing the 'assignments' as you listen. Then check the forum for tips and suggestions.
The course now comes with Natural Brilliance book by Paul Scheele. This is a handy sort of book that covers Direct Learning with a script. Where as Direct Learning is just discussed along with a basic 'how to' in the Photoreading book.
The only thing you're really missing out on is doing Photoreading. Since many can learn from the book a lone and you have a home study course, I suggest you work your way through it and come to the forum for that extra advise.
