You don't activate because you let the non conscious mind select the path rather than consciously 'trying' to do it. You just let go and notice the subtle changes in your performance. Like learning to ride a bike... if we did it "by the book" most of us would never dare climb on an exercise bike because we still haven't learnt it.

By photoreading 5 or more books you get the information from different angles and the mind puts it together better without the "nay saying" conscious mind. Of course if you get the intuition that one of the books has some information in it that you need to know consciously then you can activate that book.

Does direct learning always work? I don't know but looking at how successful schools are at teaching 'reading skills' and the number of kids getting through the systeme that are illiterate. The amount of effort against reward in direct learning is quite substantial when it works. I see it working best if you have to 1, use the skill on a regular basis and 2 have some level of the skill in the first place. So I don't see it working for learning a new language overnight. I do see it as integrating and furthering the skills of a language when the intention is there.
