I have been working with the whole mind system for a while, and I can confidently say that it is useful.

Yesterday while I was goin through the audio series coursebook I read the article about effective reading.(The art of reading to your full potential). In that article there is said to be two ways of reading. One is photoreading and the other is analytical reading.

Firstly can anyone elaborate more on analytical reading. What is it? I know it is the way to go if you are reading something you don't know fully. An example in my situation is NLP and Ericksonian hypnosis. I know about alot of nlp and definitions of things however I don't know submodalities and meta-states fully yet. Should I use analytical reading or photoreading.

Personally say when reading Erickson's books I need to know it word by word, or when reading Bandler's work he always has something intresting(an analogy or a metaphor for example) that I can use later. Which reading style should I use or how can I use both simultaneously? In what order should I use them?

And also in the field of NLP there is always something I learn when I read a book. So I never know the field completely.(Nor anyone in the world does) And in that article it is said that you should read a book analytically if you are going to learn something new. How will I make use of photoreading? What are your views?

Analytical reading should actually be the last stage of reading however the school system has taught us to read in a fashion that this is often the first stage for reading and often it is unnecessary for our needs.

Analytical reading has a reading speed of about 90 to 120 words a minute. As the name decribes it is for analysing what the author is saying.

One should not start analysing until one has had a good overview of what the author has to say overall. This comes with the whole to parts approach with the PhotoReading Whole Mind System. We take in the whole and then burrow down to the details as far as we need them through activation.

In traditional reading, a book that you apply analytical reading to would take considerably longer than just straight traditonal reading.

Using the PhotoReading System for a very detailed read we use our mind probing questions (an important tool for analytical reading also) to focus on getting the details we seek. This is often why we wind up with better comprehension over traditional reading and yet spend less time with the book.

If you apply PhotoReading you would still spend less time with the book than traditional reading. Let say analytical reading of a book takes 24 hours. If you apply PhotoReading the book can be completed in 1/3 or better so while it might still take you 8 hours for that very detailed read, the repeated passes as you activate builds the knowledge faster than one slow analytical read. You might choose conclude the book with a rapid read, you will probably find that you have already gotten as much detail as you need through the multiple passes. The benefit of working from whole to parts is that we wind up getting the details faster.

Different types of Reading

When we talk about reading, we want to make a clear distinction between two different types of reading baserd on different goals. One type of reading is the type we use when we read newspapers, magazines, or anything else that based on our skill and talents we can understand readily. Such reading may increase our store of information and open us to the possibility of greater insight. We call this type of reading whole mind reading. The goal is speed and efficiency.

Another type of reading is that in which a person reads something that at first he does not completely understand. The writer is communicating something that can increase the reader's understanding. This type of reading helps a person understand more, not just remember more information of the same intelligibility as other information already possessed. We call this type of reading analytical reading. The goal in analytical reaing to achieve comprehensive understanding of a book, assumes the reader has an unlimited amount of time.

This is what is written in the article. It states that you will use analytical reading when you dont understand the topic you read completely. In my case I am new to Ericksonian hypnosis and do not understand it completely or easily. From what I understand this article says that I should use analytical reading in a case like mine. In ericksonian hypnosis for example I have to first comprehend things like embedded commands or pressups. or indirect suggestions to be able to know what I am doing when I work with a client. Again what are your views?

I have always taken analytical reading to be critical reading. A style of reading where you are thinking through each idea presented and identifying its range of veracity and also checking if the logical sequence of ideas presented is correct, sufficient and sometimes if necessary to support the authors conclusions.

This style of reading requires much analytical thought while taking in the information.

Photoreading is a great system for taking in the information quickly. It is also useful to use with matterial that is to be read critically. Having the overview of an argument as well as knowing the final destination can help limit the range of critical thought and save time. Good writing will often provide its own critical review or discussion of limitations after arriving at the conclusions. Knowing this can save you the time of redoing the work already presented by the author.

I have read many books where I was open to the conclusions or the premise used by the author, but I did not accept the argument presented to justify the use of the concepts. Using PRWMS, as a first step, on the books would have helped significantly by allowing my to apply the appropriate level of critical reading. Note critical reading is slower than even traditional reading.

My view is if you want to get to know a subject that is giving you difficulty. PhotoRead other books on the subject by different authors although it's not necessary to activate them.

Use multiple passes with activation and only slow down for analytical reading when you have built the foundational knowledge of the subject.

Those examples are only two of many possible reading circumstances. Newspapers are for general information might only interest you for a short while and then be forgotten. Other subjects where we are looking at facts and figures are going to require analytical reading if we need to apply them somewhere in our jobs however a casual general knowledge reading is only required if you just want to keep up with the industry.
