You only really use soft gaze or Photofocus during the PhotoReading step. For previewing we allow ourselves to see more of the page than we do for elementary reading. Use the Tangerine Technique.
If you haven't got the skill to notice the tone of an authors writing at this point then don't worry about it. The more books you read the more you will notice. As I said before " You might already notice..."
Just keep previewing light, pull out 20 to 25 trigger words from every 20th page or so. When 8 minutes is up count the number of trigger words, give yourself a pat on the back and decide now much closer to the target you want to get on the next book. Keep it playful but stay within the times recommended.
