Just thought I'd drop by and add a note to say that you can get a free copy of full version Mindmapping software, namely ConceptDraw MindMap 2 Standard Edition on the cover of the UK magazine called PCPlus (June issue).

There are some open source alternatives. http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

I haven't tried it because I find pen and paper more flexible.

Christopher, I get PCPlus here in South Africa, surely you must be able to get it in the States, try one of your main local magazine distributors.

Prosperity, I have MindManager2002 SE, I found MindManager quicker and better for brainstorming, ConceptDraw offers a tree structure, like Windows Explorer, for brainstorming which I find slow and difficult to navigate. So far I have found MindManager better for keyboard only use. ConceptDraw is a bit fiddly and this takes away the needed speed. But if you can't get MindManager, ConceptDraw MindMap may still be a good choice, as their drawing functions are better, this would probably be because the drawing functions are well developed from ConceptDraw's other design programs.

You can download a trial of ConceptDraw MindMap (probably version 3.5) from here :
http://www.conceptdraw.com/en/resources/mindmap/trial.php

but it's the professional edition, the one on the mag is the standard edition.
