I'm just a beginner myself, but the message that gets repeated around here is to gain understanding in layers and to practice different ideas. Time and other pressures are reported to be complicating factors for the beginner. Do searches of the forum, and check out the various stored archives (see drop-down menu).

Apply the 5 day test/experiement to the book.
Add activation passes as needed.

You can do the 5 day test in a day or two just allow at least 20 minutes between sessions.

Knowing what you want to get from the book & having a very strong clear purpose. Most people that are experiencing activation problems are due to not having a purpose and not knowing what they want to get from the book.

Activation problems may stem even more centrally from the lack of a 'dialogical' process during activation. It's easy to have a purpose for a book to be interesting or useful; that purpose must be translated into questions that are actively followed through on during activation. The mind must be active. We come to reading, most of us, with passive habits, letting the text lead us along. At least, that's the idea I'm experimenting with.
