Can I just look at the center of the book and notice all 4 corners without seeing the "X"? Can I use that as Photofocus or do I have to see that darn "X"? And when noticing the corners do I need to notice the white of the page or is it even necessary?

Yes noticing the white of the page is necessary. That way you are not focusing on the text alone.
