I have also noticed that after photoreading for a few moments, the pages seem to become more clear, even if I still can't consciously see what I'm reading. A bit like the clarity you get after looking at one of those stereogram images for a few minutes... initially the eyes are divergent and defocused, but after a while everything becomes perfectly clear.
