You must understand it takes time to develop this skill. I also, like most other people, if not all those who are proficient with the system recommend starting with a really really easy book. By doing this you are laying the foundations for the system to which you can then venture out on more pressing material.
Starting with a really easy book gives you the time needed to build confidence in knowing the steps unconciously, meaning you can do them without thinking too much about them. It also gives you the opportunity to start encouraging your eyes to see the written page with a divergent gaze. If you use something that has stress attached to it, in the case of a text that will be examined then you will be thinking thoughts about the book and its subsequent examination and not on the steps needed to use the system effectively.
