I can see it happening when most of your knowledge comes from browsing or skimming books to learn things thoroughly.
Have you ever read about something, perhaps like how to do a certain type of math problem or perhaps a do-it-yourself project and find yourself constantly refering back to the text while doing the actual thing to find out the next step?
Sometimes practice (doing) is a better lesson than reading.
