I just got my SFQ personal learning course today and finished reading through the manual. I noticed that it was not recommended to drink cold water before or after practice.

I tend to drink a lot of water throughout the day. The water I drink is usually good and cold. Should I allow the water to reach room temperature? What is the reason for not drinking cold water. Could it be a thermodynamic reason, i.e. the cold water will use some of my qi to become warmer?

I believe it has to do with the process in which your body must bring the cold water's temperature to that of the body.

This process requires energy.

I'm no expert but that's the first thing that comes to mind.

I agree with Michael. It also would affect the flow of energy.

I read in an alternative health book that we should never drink cold water because it is a shock to the system. I have not drank it for years and now find it has lost its appeal. If you think about it, it is very easy to drink a glass of room tempature water in one gulp while cold water tends to take your breath away.

Hi,
Your stomach and spleen meridians like to be warm. Some people will actually experience a mild stomach ache or indigension from making their stomach/spleen too cold (also from wrong foods).

It is at least correct to say, your body is wasting energy in warming the cold water to body temperature. Then also it can be a shock. Finally it is best for your spleen and stomach to not expose it to cold drinks or herbs unless you have a stomach/spleen heat problem. I'm assuming you're healthy, so I'd suggest just avoid cold drinks because it is simply better for you to do so.

Probably due to the cold water tightening the muscles of the throat an neck and as with all exercises you don't get much flexibility out of tighten muscles... ie you should warm up and cool down before and after exercises. Unless of course you enjoy having cramps.

I imagine a headache could be a side effect?

My guess

I have been drinking cold water regularly for a few years now. I haven't experienced any problems like headaches or cramps. But I do get very thirsty after drinking cold water.

Thanks for the replies...

It is because your body is in a state of relaxation. Much like when your sleeping.
Your body is focused on the task. To introduce food or water into the body at this time distracts it form the task and throws it off ballance.
