Here's my take on healing. Energy is directed by intentions... and thought. If I were to heal myself (or Master Lin were to heal me), then I spent all my time expecting and looking for the pain (or ailment). Then I'd be in a situation where I've had the channels opened and the healing performed... it may take a little time for a 3 pound tumor (or less dramatic ailment) to physically clear up. In fact the clearing up of the physical manifestation of the ailment may bring more energy and pain into the area. However, my thoughts dwelling on the ailment and it's symptons would re-establish the blockages. Thus recreating the ailment before it could physically manifest itself.
This added to Master Lin's comment that healing ailments that have been around for a long time requires more effort and time. I suspect that it's because it takes longer for the mind to stop recreating the blockages, since the mental patterns associated with the blockages are so well established.
