Does Master Lin actually mean STRAIGHT ??
I always thought Mother Nature intended our spine to be curved, thereby giving us flexibility of body movement. If it were
straight as a broom stick, we couldn't play all the different kinds of sports.

Am I missing something here?

I've asked myself the same question. And consider my nature, it's surprising I haven't posted the same question.

I did play with my hip positions for a while, since this will adjust the curvature of the lower back.

However, my interpretation has evolved to be a relaxed natural position. The straight spine and chin tucked in, I have changed to be the position my body would adopt if I was suspended by the crown of my head. In this way I loose the upper back slouch and the neck extends and the chin comes in slightly.

In this way my spine becomes long, long, longer.

The literal mind just looking for an opportunity to jump all over something. Completely straight and straight as a stick can be two entirely differnt things. Qigong is not the time to be stuck in our mental constructs, but rather see what's beyond them.

Dear Shawn....Thanx for your comment. The emptiness is "where thoughts ultimately cease or greatly diminish..." per the manual, p. 19. "We and everything in our world are all from the emptiness and will go back to the emptiness."

Could you paraphrase this for me? Just what is the emptiness? is it a state of being? is it a nothingness? is it the reality of pure spirit? Is it mental or thought energy? is it primal Cause?

If it is physical energy, then it cannot be nothingness or emptiness, because physical energy is composed of particles, which can be detected with electronic instrumentation.

Yes, the mind is a computer, but please paraphrase "GO INTO THE EMPTINESS"

I'll give a crack at it, but I'm sure there
are better answers.

For me, the emptiness is God.
For someone else, Allah, Jahweh, etc.

As soon as I say God, I have
limited Him/Her. I am trying to
use a word to describe the
indescribable; it can't be done.
Something is going to be left out.
My definition is empty of meaning.
I can only experience God,
but never fully describe that
experience. And even my experience
will be limited by my words.
My experience will be empty
of true meaning to anyone else
other than myself.

85, The Emptiness might be considered the same as Tone 40, Serenity of Beingness. Different doctrines might have different names for the same state.

I liked both Shawn and Mayflowers answers. Dont get heavy over the need to define the emptiness but if you peek out the back door of emptiness you'll see everythingness!

Just let this go and keep trying to go there. It is so beyond words in a place where you don't need them as communication is done in ways beyond what we can comprehend.

Thanx for your replies.......And I agree with all 3 of you. I sorta thought I was on the right track, but wanted other viewpoints to confirm what I believed the emptiness is.
Tone 40 relates with me perfectly.
(that's a Scientology term for those not familiar with it)

Also...In my attempt to comprehend the universal energy, I see it as the Genetic
Entity (the urge to create and survive, composed of Yin and Yang),

plus the physical energy imbedded in matter (atoms),

plus the magnetic force
created by the movement of planets throughout the galaxies------------

all coming together constituting a universal energy.

When we align our deepest thoughts with
this energy, we're swept into the current of create and survive.

Now, there is yet one remaining difficulty I'm trying to resolve

i.e. when Master Lin says everything returns to the emptiness.

That can't be taken literally,
can it? Does he know simething we dont?

Is this a bit of mysticism?

Does it have a specific meaning?

I believe Chunyi may speak to this in the level one or two lectures when he talks about going back to the "manufacturer". Steven Wolinsky's Quantum Psychology discusses this with the one substance. But it is really not the issue here.

Spending time doing the meditations will bring you the insight you're looking for rather than the knowledge you think you're after.
