Hi all,
In an ideal setting where you have extensive control of your time, I'm sure the 'true' Polyphasic sleep cycle can be utilized and maintained. I have tried and failed to maintain this cycle. But, not being one to throw in the towel, I have experimented with different sleep cycles during this time. The issue is the flexiblity of your own time to allocate the necessary 'nap' time during business hours is difficult.
I have adopted a sleep cycle that I have made to work for me.
Starting at 12 to 12:30 midnight, I sleep 3 1/2 to 4 hours. At 'bout 12:30 noon I take a 20 minute nap. Between 3:30 and 4:00 I take a 15 to 20 minute nap. Occasionally, if I feel a need for it, I take a 20 to 30 minute nap at 8:00 to 8:30 pm.
Total time between 4 to 5 hours of sleep a day. I found it EXTREMELY important to have things that I find VERY important to do during those time the rest of the household is asleep. YOU can be your worst adversary in adopting these sleep cycle changes....
I've setup physical anchors to help in waking up.
One of the things I have incorporated is that when I'm at home and I wake up from one of my cycles I immediately brush my teeth
I've set this as an anchor for waking up and has worked very well.
Keeping it fun...
:>

Over the holiday break, I managed to get myself on the polyphasic sleep. In fact, I don't think I will ever go back! I used to have problems with sleeping too long and would end up sleeping 8-12 houra a day.

Ironically, I didn't have a problem adjusting. I do computer work, so sometimes I have to work at 2 AM to perform maintenance during low activity times.

There is one thing I do differently from what others have posted. I made my own CD which induces deep sleep. I listen to it during the 30 minute naps. I made it using Brainwave Generator at www.bwgen.com.

I play 20 minute of deep theta tones and then play "10-Minute Supercharger". I suppose you can use "Deep Relaxtion" paraliminal as well, in place of my theta sleep.

Here are some other things I learned as well:

1. You got to exercise. The better shape you are in the better quality sleep you get. I usually do 30 minutes a day on my rebounder when I get up.

2. You got to eat healthy. No more candy, junk food, soda, alcohol, or caffeniated beverages. I find I can't stick to the sleep schedule if I consume these types of food. The more junk I eat, the harder it is.

3. Drink plenty of water. Keeping yourself hydrated is important.

4. Learn to meditate. This helps immensely during those 30 minute naps. You can relax your mind and immediately go into a deep sleep.

Hope this helps.

First, let me suggest that we use this faster loading topic than the original "Polyphasic Sleep". (I'm still on 56k )

I'm trying to do something similar to what foneguy9 is doing. I would love to get my sleep down to about 4 hours or so. Because I have committments and things to do at certain times on certain days, I will have to regular sleep, one or two days a week. Can you do this, or will it mess it all up?

I currently sleep 6 1/2 hours, (roughly 8:45-3:30) core sleep, and have 4 more 1/2 hour naps during the day. (note: I'm only 15, and have slept like 9-10 hours my whole life.)

I am trying to wake up earlier, like 2:30, so I can gradually reduce, I set my alarm, but it doesn't wake me up. (Normally did when I woke up at 6:00, and still does for my naps.)

Could it be that I can't hear it during the 1.5 hour sleep cycle, so I wake up when it's done?

Any help would be appreciated...
