Well, I hate to break it to you, but we're all exchanging energy and swapping electrons all the time.
Can you limit it? Yes. Can you limit your perceptiveness? Yes, one can make themselves literally blind if they really focused on it or had a traumatic event happen and their other than conscious mind did it for them.
I have a good friend in the SFQ International Guild who got so annoyed at the people talking to her (just like the Medium TV show), that she chose to turn it totally off. Since coming to SFQ she's building her ability to selectively interact and open to it when she chooses. My wife did the same thing when she was young.
Consider looking at it from DesertSphinx's perspective. My only suggestion is to be aware of when you are adding a judgment/interpretation to what you're sensing.
