Your friend's idea about using mother earth energy is similar to what I do to get grounded - I visualise mother earth warmly clasping my feet and that they are being lovingly held deep in the earth like the roots of a tree.
My understanding is that earth energy is yin and heaven energy is yang so I like to mix both together for balanced energy when healing.
