You're on the tight track. When you feel you're not getting it check in with your purpose... what you want to know and why. Then look at your mind probing questions... would they logically lead you in the direction of your purpose.
With rapid reading consider the 80/20 rule... you might just needed to have allowed another period of incubation before diving into rapid reading.
