rocklad, it really does all depend on you. When I was regularly meditating 3 or more hours a day, I found that five hours a night was more than plenty. I tried going back to sleep, but was fully refreshed. So I just started getting up earlier and doing more in the morning.
Now, I need at least six hours. Actually, I need to do more meditating, but until I get into a better practice I'll be going on about 7 hours.
It's also not just a trade off of 20 or 40 minutes of meditation and you can reduce your sleep. The nature of your meditation will determine how rejuevinating it is for you.
Also don't discount sleep. It's an natural meditation for going into the emptiness and healing yourself.
