Hi Calmcacil,

When your eyes are in PhotoFocus you will see things slightly blurred in the beginning. Once you have done a couple of PhotoFocus sessions on book(s), you will notice that your vision is getting clearer again, just like in the normal hard focussed state. So don't get too hung up on seeing words blurry or not, you just have to focus on the "ghost" part of the page in the middle of the book or on the imaginary "x" as described in the book.

In response to preparing, I usually postview rather than prepare. When you postview, you look through the book for things that are related to your purpose. Then you can ask yourself questions about the things you encounter, like "how does this work? what are the details of..? and why is that the case?". Those type of questions usually do the trick for me.
