Novels do not require all the steps of the system unless you're studying them for literary purposes. The instructor will have guided you then discuss a certain aspect of the novel, plot, moral theme etc. Otherwise a novel is for pleasure reading and even PhotoReaders like to enjoy the time spent on that and we do like to give it a little more time.
So for learning PhotoReading use a non-fiction book to help you learn all the steps of the system. Most often a novel you just give a short preview, PhotoRead and activate using rapid reading.
However if you want to increase your rapid reading speed of a novel you will want to use all the steps of the system a few times and the best books for that are non-fiction books.
As said the test will appear blurred in the beginning and later may take on a clarity. As explained on page 47 of the PhotoReading book 3rd edition.
