All you need to get started is to say to the other person (fill in the blanks)
"When-----happens, I feel -----. I need-------. "
example: When (someone calls me an idiot), I feel (hurt). I need (to be treated in a respectful way)."
Say "I" rather than "you". That simple. Stay calm and rational, simply state it.
You could also try assuming the others do mean endearment...staff at my workplace tease each other relentlessly. Whenever a line is crossed, it is said- then everyone knows to not go that far or that direction with the person. It is a very healthy workplace!
