As a rule of thumb: If you are an E person, the deceased's photos go in the West. If you are a W person, the deceased's photos go in the North. The general idea is to avoid having them in a good direction.
That said, it seems like you have intuitively found good and comfortable spots for your friend and mother-in-law. Whether you should adjust them will be your call.
