Hello,

I am just thinking out loud ... I have this thing for spending less than I earn. And that got me thinking what message it is sending to the universe. I have gotten used to living like this. I have never lived beyond my means. So while I could do with more comforts and more abundance (who couldn't) I satisfy myself with what I have. This means that I do not get some things or that I get some things cheaper. And today I thought to myself, would living like that send a message to the universe that I do not need or want anymore or anything? Of course, the inverse would be to live beyond my means. Surely this is not the way to send a message to the universe that I need more?

Maybe I am way off track with this but maybe someone has some thought that they would like to share. I do think it is a bit odd to have such thoughts, but while I do satisfy myself with what I have I know that some things I have to hold back on. So maybe I am creating an appearance of living within my means by not expressing some of my desires. Yes, I am a bit confused about this.

Cheers,

Hi Slawek;

I think you bring up a good point about managing your resources wisely. They have compared managing money or wealth like tending a garden. It takes time and patience but as the crop matures you have this large amount of stuff to do something with.

My opinion of you living within your means is that you are sending a message to the Universe that you are taking care of and managing your resources in a prudent manner. When you do this it will slowly bring more circumstances your way to increase your holdings.

Most of us will never be superstars in the financial arena although we can take some of our extra money and invest it into companies that have a true superstar team running it and let them make something out of it for us, called buying an appreciating asset.

You can do this using other vehicles also.

When you are using offers of credit to achieve your wants and desires you can become a slave to what you owe. In this day and age of the corporate drive for profits they are relentless in collecting.

If you use credit to purchase appreciating assets (that make sense) you are again managing your resources wisely.

I'd advise you to stay on the path you are on.

Thanks Jeff for your advice.

So basically it boils down to creating value (the appreciating assets) or enabling someone else (the superstars) to create it and then you get a share equal to the level of your enablement.

The thing is that if you just live within your means you will not unbalance your situation and bankrupt yourself but neither will you improve your situation. So there has to be something to move you out of that state and into a new state of greater abundance. Living within your means is a good place or it is better then living beyond your means but why settle for good, right, especially when you could live better?

So then I think that living within your means is sending a message that you are OK. You are managing. So in and of itself such living is not goign to create greater abundance than you are experiencing now. This is what I am thinking now ...

Hi Slawek;

The most painless way to break out of this bubble is, when you get paid, before you pay anyone else, pay yourself 10% of your income.

You can make adjustments in your lifestyle and not miss 10%. After 10 paydays you have saved a whole check, you find something to invest in that will compound and continue to do this every payday.

If you have made some good choices in your investments, in several years you will start seeing some big returns.

When you get a raise, put the new income into your investment as you have lived without it.

Another thing I learned from studying my Dad, who was tighter than bark on a tree, he would always buy things he needed on sale. The money he saved he paid himself and noted it on the calender. At the end of the month he took this amount out of the bank and hid it away. When he passed away he told my Mother where to find his stash. It was a tidey sum. She then put it back into the bank.

How many people do you know that save money purchasing something and then blow it on something else. They saved nothing. This simple thing I have never read in any financial books or advice.

Have a plan for the money you save on expenses because it could very well make you rich if invested properly.

I would recommend a couple books to you that are fairly old but very effective.

Wealth without Risk by Charles Givens

Best of Luck to you

I think living within one's means applies to whether you have an income of $1000 a month or 1 million dollars a month. The thing is if you are happy and able to pay for the purchases you make without a second thought then you're living perfectly within your means. If you're choosing to do without something that in your heart you would like to have or enjoy then really you are not living within your means. You're making do and to get to the point where you don't have to make do and enjoy as much abundance in whatever form you want then apply the strategies Jeff has suggested. They will help you to grow out of limitation which isn't really living within one's means it's living with limits.

Thank you Alex for this clarification. It makes sense now. I am just surprised that all this time I have told myself that I was living wihtin my means while it turns out I have just acceopted certain limits, limits on my heart's desires. Unbelievable! But I am glad that I see it for what it is.
